Western Sword Fern (Polystichum munitum)
©2009 Ed Book

I was out for a walk in the forest and found some interesting Sword Ferns filling the forest understory.  The sky was clear so some bits of sunlight were getting through to the forest floor which clipped the highlights of any images made showing sunlit surfaces.  ('clipping the highlights refers to areas where the light is so bright that the pixels there record white with no details.  It's okay for specular highlights to clip (specular highlights are spots of light that are usually pin point reflections of the sun as in a drop of water or shiny metal surface in sunlight) because the eye expects them but broader light areas being clipped cause the eye to be uncomfortable... too bright to look at is the feeling the viewer gets.

I was in a deep canyon in late afternoon but the sun was still shining down into the understory blasting clipping at me here and there resulting in  unusable exposures.  On thing I teach my students is that when there is some attribute of imagemaking that is preventing you from making your intended image, then use that attribute in your favor and if possible exaggerate that factor.  (for example, if the wind is moving your subject too much to get a sharp image, then, exaggerate the motion to use it to make your image.

In this case, I got low to the ground with the fern between me and the sun to record the fronds backlighted and glowing with light.

Peony (Paeonia suffruticosa)
©2009 Ed Book

This is one of the peonies from the garden.  The air was moving too much outside so I brought this blossom into the kitchen and set it up on a stand under the skylight.  As the sun was going in and out of clouds and changing the light coming from the skylight, I experimented using a small reflector directing it differently for each exposure.  The character of the flower changes considerably depending on where and how intense the primary and reflected secondary sources of light light the subject.   Most of the light being from directly above with indirect diffused light coming from the skylight walls, I used the reflector to direct light at the bottom sides of surfaces to lessen the shadows.

I used a Canon EOS 1DsMkII camera body with 180mm macro lens.  I checked to see how an added polarizer would treat the flower and decided against using it as there petal surfaces weren't needing to have shine minimized.  I used f/32 for rmost of the exposures to maximize depth of field.  I have some more flowers waiting for their turn tomorrow.

Canon EOS 1Ds MkII with 180mm macro. ISO100, 15sec @ f/22 with polarizer. lighting was ambient and I was holding an umbrella covered with a dark tarp overhead to reduce the sky reflection from the water highlights. The water lilies are growing in a muck bucket waiting for me to finish the pond. The flower is about 3/4inch across. Another muck bucket has the larger lily that will bloom later in the summer.

The dragonfly––was one of a few that I collected from the windows inside the house at the end of last summer. I put them in ziploc bags and stored them in my film refrigerator. (I no longer need a film refrigerator... maybe I'll take up beer drinking and will have a place to store the beer.)

...a macro from yesterday evening in the garden. I used a 180mm macro lens and macro flashes. One flash was positioned above and to the right of the flower and set at 1/8 and the other was positioned against the flower on the left side set at 7/8 so that the flower would glow. I chose to let the background go black as there is a fence a couple feet away otherwise, I would add a third flash to light the background if it wasn't too far away.

late yesterday evening there was a break in a much needed rain and I went out to see that the wind had quit too. I mounted my new 180mm macro lens (which will be sent in for warrenty repair because it appears to me that the clutch for the auto/manual focus isn't working--I won't focus but I can trick it sometimes) and my new dual macro flash attachment on the camera and went out to confront some flowers closely. Darkness came and I kept making exposures. The flash has modeling lights. I handheld the camera (very heavy) and moved in till I saw sharp focus and tripped the shutter... I sometimes couldn't tell what I was focusing on... It was an exercise and a break from the multimedia project I'm working on. Then today, while rendering in iMovie on one machine, I dust spotted and optimized a little... here's one result...This was recorded at 1:1 magnification at about f/45.

'Sierra passes are 'chains required' or closed... that was some storm that came through last night. I'm northbound on the east slope of the northern California Sierras and was stopped by sideways snow flying in the air. I stopped for breakfast just now and was trying to figure out how to get more room on the PowerBook (58 GB of photos and I haven't had time to make backups on DVD (4.26 GB burning to DVD takes a long time). I'm heading for the ranch now and am battling the weather and driving burnout (equates to having to stop often to get out and walk around and that really burns time) But, I'd rather drive safely than put on dangerous milage.

so to summarize so far...

drove south from home in WA to the California Poppy Reserve in Antelope Valley (southern CA) and then on to the Anza Borrego desert east of the mountains from San Diego near the Mexican border. Then I drove east along the border to Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument. Then I changed itinerary to shorten the trip. I drove north and stopped at Death Valley... 'had the van towed a couple hours to Ridgecrest from Death Valley for repair (I knew it was the fuel pump in about two seconds when the van wouldn't start... (intuitively? or psychic... or in tune to the van) back on the road, I drove up the east Sierra with lots of snow in the air along the way...

working my way home as I can... of course, some times, I just have to stop to look and sometimes pull the camera out...

here are some...

agave century plant and brittle bush near Yaqui Pass, Anza Borrego desert CA ©2005 Ed Book edbookphoto.com

When I made this photograph, the wind was blowing and had been doing so all night. I set up the camera on a tripod and found many compositions but I had to wait till the wind stopped... that is if it would stop.... Because, the bushes were moving and I couldn't freeze their motion pre-dawn, I allowed for a long exposure to cause the bushes to blur even more.... if something in the image might look accidental, exaggerate it to make it intentional... (the waving of the plants)

'took tree days to drive down here. I started at 2 AM (not an early wake-up but instead a pack all day till 2 AM and then think that sleeping will take too long... so I drove down I-5 to northern California and stopped for a 5 hour nap at about 11AM...

then, my sleeping patterns were off and I would be missing daytime central California ... but the traffic was light at night.... I stopped early and slept most of the night near the Grapevine...

then I went west into Antelope Valley to the poppy reserve and sat down with my camera (new 1Ds MkII) and manual to figure out enough so that I could trip the shutter... I mostly snoozed... 'just as the sun was sinking low, I set out to see the poppies... 'made a few images and enjoyed the cool breeze that was messing with my subjects...

after dark, I drove on to San Bernadino and the freeway craziness of that area. I left the interstate at Temecula and drove over the mountains to Borrego Springs. I've been here the past three days and will stay a couple more before heading over toward the east and perhaps Organ Pipe NM.

Using this digital with soon afterward feedback on the computer is a totally different way of photography... the instant feedback and adjustments is so rewarding... so much more than I envisioned... here are some images.

UPDATE: ides of march... just after midnite... I wasn't able to manage to find a wireless connection in Borrego Springs so this has been hanging a few days. After fininshing morning photos this morning, in the southern mountains of Anza Borrego, I continued south to Ocotillo, down near the border. I took a side road south of I-8 to avoid the fast traffic and in the first fifty miles, saw over two dozen border patrol vehicles. Along the way today, when I did have to get on I-8, there is an area of sand dunes at the far west edge of southern CA and the wind was blowing steadily and gusting buffeting the van. Ahead, I could see sand blowing off the top of the dunes looking so much like snow blowing off snow cornices. I stopped in Yuma long enough to buy gas and ask about a wireless internet access... no luck, but I did find one here in Gila Bend. I parked in a lot next to a large motel and have a connection, abeit slow and mail won't go out but I was able to clear my mailbox... and maybe these photos that somehow uploaded (but mail wouldn't?) will get into my posts...

here's a start:

(some may want to delete my journal from their friends list because I'm going to post a bunch... so be ready...

Saturday night I drove up to Mount Tahoma Trails in snow. I put the Explorer in 4-wd in the driveway and kept it on all the way... snowcovered highway all the way...

I had my one day/year office duty on Sunday and then Monday, went up into the north district to do some trail grooming. I drove up to where the snowmobile taxis were parked and unloaded my stuff... then, I drove back down the hill about a mile and a few hundred feet elevation loss... I got dressed for snow, put on my skis and skiied back up to the snowmobile...

then, rode up to the ridge top and to Copper Creek Hut for a mocha... then, on toward the Puyallup Ridge Trail grooming with the snowmobile pulling the roller groomer. The temps were in the mid 20's but I was dressed warmly and had gotten my blood flowing from the ski-in...

along the way, I passed some Osier Red Twig Dogwoods and stopped because I liked the pattern the red and white made.

osier red twig dogwood in snow ©2005 Ed Book http://edbookphoto.com

I used the Pentax Optio S40 digital camera... I did take along the Nikon F4 film camera but didn't take it out at all that day.

Because I was going to be the only one out on the Puyallup Ridge Trail and given our machines' penchant for breaking down and getting stuck, I took all my survival gear and warm sleeping bag just in case... as well as cell phone, Department of Natural Resources radio, and FRS/GMRS/GPS radio... lots to drink and some food bars.

I drove out to where the Pisten Bully tracked and enclosed cab groomer was parked out on the ridge... I turned the snowmobile around and put it beside a tree that I flagged with orange tape (in case it gets buried in snow before someone goes out to retrieve it. (The Pisten Bully was way out there because Bob had groomed out and then skiied back on Sunday.

I groomed back to where I parked the Explorer and spent about eight hours on the trail... It's a good thing that I knew the trail because part hasn't been groomed yet this year and it's easy to go the wrong way when there isn't a detent in the snow from where it has been groomed before.

I drove home and arrived about mid-nite... woke this morning so sore I could barely get out of bed...

cactus - San Rafael Swell - Utah (C)2004 Ed Book edbookphoto.com

I was looking at the rock because it looked as if it was excess concrete that had been poured onto the ground and coated all the other rocks... thus I thought till I read that the concrete-like rock was a formation much much older than everything else in that part of the country and the other rock was added by settling tens of millions of years later... on in a blink of God's eye... (for those who say that the universe was created 2004 years ago on a Sunday afternoon the second Tuesday in July.)
