I was hoping that this pass-through of this region would include a few days at Great Basin National Park but I was homeward bound and only had a couple days before something I had to be home for... so, my only glimpse like on my last visit was at sundown...  So what I know of this new national park is what I've read and this silhouette.

About a week ago, Gene, and Phil, fellow ski patrollers and I skied out to this ridge to scout a hopefully proposed location for a new temporary Mount Tahoma Trails hut about two miles beyond the Copper Creek Hut. The view included Mount Rainier above the Glacier View Wilderness and Mount Beljica, the Goat Rocks, Sawtooth Ridge, Mount Adams, Griffin Mountain, Mt St Helens, Mount Storm King, Puget Sound, and the Olympic Mountain Range. What a day! What a view!
(the image also has three sets of cougar tracks that course along the ridge).

Mount Tahoma Trails - Ski Trooper Ridge - 360º panorama

©2008 Ed Book

We are calling the ridge Ski Trooper Ridge to honor the Army's 10th Mountain Division who got their start early in the 1940's on Mount Rainier. The location is on privately owned timber company land and so any hut we would erect would have to be stationed in place temporarily being moved after the snow season. We've been thinking of designing some sort of arrangement of ocean shipping containers mounted on trailers. This hut would be crude compared to our (Mount Tahoma Trails Association) other huts which are actually (3) two story cabins and a two story yurt located along our 50+ miles of cross country ski trails.

Red Alder Colonnade on Gold Mountain, Green Mountain State Forest, Kitsap Peninsula, Puget Sound lowland forest, WA ©2007 Ed Book (all rights reserved - DO NOT COPY) http://edbookphoto.com

'takin' a break from a project to look at some images I made yesterday while returning home from an appointment. I went for a short walk on Gold Mountain in the Green Mountain State Forest south of home about ten miles. It's January and the Red Alder is showing it's red phase of new growth with catkins soon. Alder is one of the first trees to return after clear cut logging. It grows quickly and is considered a garbage tree because it's brittle and has little strength. It fixates nitrogen in the soils and makes it acidic so the firs, cedars, and pine can start. It's overwhelmingly the most populous deciduous tree of the Puget Sound lowlands.

Upon close examination of the top of the highest peak, you should be able to see the High Rock Lookout, coated white with rhyme ice. The lookout provides an excellent view of the Tatoosh Range from the south with Mount Rainier towering above. Access to the lookout is from a trailhead located at the forest service road at Towhead Pass. Its an interesting mile long trail with a rise of 1000 ft. I plan to spend the night at the lookout some moonless night this year (after the snow is off the trail) to make startrail photos. Anyone want to join me? Of course, a trip like that is weather and moon-phase dependent.

I composed this image like I did because I liked the repeating line that the ridgeline produced.

My home is across the water beyond the ship. To get to Whidbey Island, I drive north about twenty miles and across the Hood Canal Floating Bridge to the Olympic Peninsula. Then, I drive north another thrirty miles to Port Townsend where I catch the ferry across Admiralty Inlet to Keystone on Whidbey Island. while I've got your attention look here (I approved this ad))

This fence line caught my eye but snow was falling and with low light levels made it impossible to make a sharp exposure. I returned the following day and waited for a break in the snowfall. It didn't seem like it would happen so I continued up the road toward the pass. A few hours later, when passing by again, I got my opportunity.

Earlier today, Mt St Helens was putting out a steam flume from the lava dome.

Mt Hood is lost in the haze to the left of Mt St Helens... I made this image a little while ago and now all light is lost in the sky save the glows from the cities: Seattle, Olympia, Vancouver, Portland, and Yakima...

and now, I leave this mountaintop to drive down to cross the Nisqually River and then up the valley to Mt Rainier NP and Paradise...

I don't think I ever posted these photos. I was up on the road to Obstruction Point in Olympic National Park a couple years ago and came across this camera setup... it was Will Landon (Will's website)with one of his telephoto panoramic cameras waiting for morning alpenglo on Mt Olympus and the Bailey Range. We got skunked... clouds formed in the east just at sunrise and the air was too hazy to get a good sharp image. Will and I chatted a while and then when I got home I looked up his website and bought his book on Mt Rainier Panoramas. This camera had a back that he manufactured for film 12 inches wide.

continued... After eating and gassing up the van, I continued west on I-70 about 17 miles to a rest stop and stopped for the night. The night was black and I couldn't see even a silhouette on the horizon so imagine my surprise in the morning when I climbed out of my bed in the back of the van to this sight.

I-70 entering a cut in the San Rafael Reef, Utah (C)2004 Ed Book edbookphoto.com
tractor trailers entering a cut in the San Rafael Reef on I-70, Utah

The San Rafael Reef is the eastern escarpment of a 40 mile x 70 mile swell (anicline) several thousand feet high. The reef itself is Navaho and Wingate Sandstone and stretches for seventy miles penetrated only by the Interstate highway, the San Rafael River canyon and a few slot canyons.

Vanadium and Uranium were found early last century by sheepherders. Vanadium is used for hardening steel and there was a Uranium mining boom in the '50's when our 'leaders' thought our Russian friends were our enemy... it was the start of our quest for WMD and efforts to stomp on others that possessed them too to protect themselves against us. In Emery County alone, there were 50,000 uranium mining claims... several miners got extremely rich and the others went away driving Lincolns and Buicks.

Today, the land is mostly controlled by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and several efforts have been mounted to make the area a National Park or Monument however locals have thwarted those efforts so far.
