a bad photo and the birds wouldn't get organized and get in a line... this is a small crop from an image in the village of Ocracoke, North Carolina on the Outer Banks. Reviewing images, their disarray caught my eye. I didn't move a thing. 'pocket Pentax point in the general direction digi camera'

when I stopped in North Carolina to pick up my trailer for my return home, Lisa and the kids took me to a boardwalk near town (Elizabeth City) and I saw this tree waiting for me (notice the "X" that has been a reoccurring theme on this trip). The waters and shoreline there were littered with debris from the recent hurricanes and there were a couple sunken barges sticking out from the hurricane that hit that location directly last year.

tripod on the beach outer banks North Carolina (C)2004 Ed Book edbookphoto.com
Outer Banks barrier islands, North Carolina

I was standing there waiting for some pelicans to fly surfing the air being forced from under the breaking waves and was holding the digital camera in my hand... I got a strange sensation on my feet and when I looked down, I saw that they were sinking into the sand... with water over my shoes... I started prancing and ran away... but had the presence of mind to turn quickly to see that my film camera on the tripod were safe and was able to record part of the event digitally... It caught me totally by surprise-I was so into thinking about the pelicans...

ps White Pelicans and Brown Pelicans eating habits are totally different... White Pelicans float in rafts on the water and herd fish in front of them and then dip their beaks into the water to scoop up dinner... Brown Pelicans fly along just above the water watching for fish and then when they see one, they will fold their wings back against their body and dive, crashing into the water...

Pea Island shipwreck outer banks North Carolina (C)2004 Ed Book edbookphoto.com

I found the remains of this shipwreck in the dunes on Pea Island in North Carolina's outer banks... I couldn't find a composition I liked that didn't have footprints obscuring the sand patterns so chose to record with the digital camera instead of wasting film.

Currituck Beach lighthouse outer banks North Carolina (C)2004 Ed Book edbookphoto.com

When I was at this location at the north end of the drivable portion of the outer banks islands of North Carolina, the light wasn't lit till darkness... When I returned from attempting to photograph the color at the beach during sunset there was not enough light to make a photograph with the film camera. However, the Pentax Optio S40 4MP digital camera I had with me would render an image that I could tweak a bit to get an acceptable 'documentary' image. On this trip, by dark each day, I would be so tired that I would just want to find a parking place and crawl into the back to my comfy bed and try to catch some zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz till the alarm at about o'dark thirty (4:30-5:30). So, I drove by the lighthouse looking for a parking place and pointed the camera out the window holding it against the door frame to steady it... nope, that didn't work... although the camera has a setting to make exposures as long as 4 seconds, I had to raise the ASA to 400 and after about a half dozen tries, I got out and set the camera on a tripod to steady it enough for the 4 second exposure...

then, I had to tweak a bit in photoshop to get an acceptable image. This is one of those lights that pulses instead of sweeping the horizon so there was no beam projected like what I recorded when I photographed Hatteras light.
