I was hoping that this pass-through of this region would include a few days at Great Basin National Park but I was homeward bound and only had a couple days before something I had to be home for... so, my only glimpse like on my last visit was at sundown...  So what I know of this new national park is what I've read and this silhouette.

'last week, I went to  a getMETAsmart event put on by The Stock Artists Alliance at Seattle Pacific Univ.  If your photography of any value - any kind of value... you need to know this stuff.  The presentation was excellent.  I'm changing some things I'm doing and will be adding more...

ad hoc quid pro quo so little time so much to know...

and on my ferry ride home aboard the WA State Ferry Kitsap, I recorded this as well as many others.  That boat has a strange vibration to it different than the others I noticed it when the camera was at my eye and me rising up slightly on my toes to dampen most of the inherent vibration transferred through the deck... actually exchanging vibration for muscle motion...   (and depending on how much coffee and time on the feet... no alcohol involved but it might have helped steady or not)   and it also seems to move through the water differently... it's flow, I mean... (or it may have been someone that steers differently)... </tangent>

Seattle spring night from the ferry Kitsap enroute to Bremerton

Camera     Canon EOS-1Ds Mark II
lens     24mm
exposure     1/4 sec @ f/4 ISO 3200

key things here are the very slow for hand held camera at age 61 62 on a moving ferry and it's compensation of using an image stabilized lens and very wide (for full frame sensor) lens.... I also rose up on the balls of my feet and leaned against a bulkhead (nautical name for 'wall").

Because I was using such a wide angle lens my position wasn't nearly as far as it appears in the image.  I was close enough that I was looking up at the buildings.  You can see the slight tilting of the tall buildings due to perspective distortion from pointing the camera upward.

Mount Rainier and startracks from Puyallup Ridge lookout - Mount Tahoma Trails - Cascade Range, WA ©2007 Ed Book (all rights reserved - DO NOT COPY) http://edbookphoto.com

a couple weeks ago while I was out on Puyallup Ridge after sunset, I set up my Canon EOS 1Ds MkII camera on a tripod and framed in on Mt Rainier and the sky. For this composition, I made about forty thirty-second exposures using a remote release cord so as not to move the camera. In Photoshop, I imported all the individual exposures into one file in register and changed the blend mode of all layers except the bottom to 'lighten'.

I'll be leaving shortly to go up to Mount Tahoma Trails to help move the grooming equipment down to the valley.

a long read with some photos )

ps I may be skiing on my birthday... growing up in western Pennsylvania with dogwoods blooming and summer on the way who woulda thunk it that I'd be skiing on my 57th birthday. What surprises and wonders life holds for us.

I love this part of the trail as it passes through heavily blanketed Silver Fir and Grand Fir forest... it's a part of the trail that is favored by all as it traverses the top of a ridge and is flat with downhill in both directions so it is a respite from uphill trudging...

I made this image from four exposures with the Nikon Coolpix 990 digital camera and stitched them together with Photoshop CS's new "Photomerge" command... I still had to do some manual work with it to match tones and get rid of some bad merges. (those two dark areas are not merges, they are shadows... the merges are not apparent at all in this image.)

'spent the past three days helping replace a wall on the yurt at Mt Tahoma Trails Assn.

Last night, I stayed at High Hut across the Nisqually Valley from Mt Rainier. The full moon rose from Sawtooth Ridge orange as you'd expect in October. I sat in the calm 50 degree night and watched the moonlight paint the sea of clouds that filled all the valleys. The mountains and ridges looked like islands. Casseopea overhead and ursa major over the mountain. Orion let the moon pass through and after a few hours, I drifted off to sleep and then woke and went into the hut till I again woke before dawn to get up and wait on the sun. It appeared almost exactly where the moon had. All night and this morning, there was no sound but the wind wooshing through the trees below. What would have made the night perfect would have been Ilene being with me.

I now head south into the Gifford Pinchot National Forest and will be looking for images along the rivers and streams... vine maple, cottonwood and whatever catches my attention.
