Fireweed (Epilobium angustifolium) grows abundantly here in the Pacific NW where land has been cleared by logging or burned by fire-thus its common name. It's one of the first plants to establish in a cleared area and is beneficial in that it holds the soil from washing away and enriches nutrient poor soils and the souls of those who appreciate the beautiful purple-pink flowers and cotton-like seed mechanism as well as it's farewell to summer fiery autumn color cloaking of hillsides and meadows.
Autumn in the canyon of the Klickitat River near Mt Adams (volcano) in the Cascade Range just north of the Columbia River–the dry east side with forests of Garry Oak mixed with Ponderosa Pine.
