07:31 You receive the benefits of two distinct cosmic gifts today. T... More for Virgo twittascope.com/twittascope/?sign=6 #

08:56 @TheSexauer That I don't know. :) #

09:00 My day has started with an unruly 7th grade class containing a student wearing too much cologne. Windows all open though it's 44˚F outside. #

09:43 Is Cyber Monday as big a deal anymore with so many people having good 'net access at home and online stores doing Black Friday? #

09:45 Had odd but amusing dream last night of being part of a Top Gear challenge, one of the traveling ones, here in New England. 'Twas fun! :) #

09:49 Also dreamt that @stephenfry and Hugh Laurie were doing a speaking engagement here for my students. Maybe I watch too much BBC America. #

09:51 We did watch Blackadder's Christmas Carol last night, so that may have something to do with this. #

09:57 @smilinstanlee I can't imagine referring to it as "my" anniversary. I also don't know anyone among my friends and family who says that. #

12:17 @lesjoujou Philly style... cook the meat in a pan with onions, peppers, mushrooms, top with cheese on a bun, in a wrap or over nacho chips. #

14:11 I think it's a little bit creepy how many of my classmates are friending our middle school shop teacher... #

14:11 ...but I also have now-former students who have friended me on Facebook and that seems fine, WITH BOUNDARIES. #

14:15 Maybe it's because this shop teacher always seemed to lack those boundaries when we are kids that it now creeps me out. #

17:57 I crack up when I hear people on TV saying "War-chester-shy-er" sauce. In our MA-accented house, it's Wustashr. #

18:12 @annasor Oh, I know. I can't figure out where these yahoos are getting their pronunciation! :) #

18:13 @ajodasso I can't figure where these folks on the Food Network are getting this mangled version of the word! #

20:14 @twxabfn True. We usually let ours die, but we're not as hardcore of gamers as you are. :) #

20:48 @marnanel That is so bizarre... :( #

20:54 @nashuatelegraph What's the story with the Holiday Stroll tree lighting happening way ahead of schedule? We had a disappointed 7 year old! #

21:26 If I win the #overstock Zhu Zhu pets contest, my niece will be a very happy girl on Christmas! :) bit.ly/64fjhW #

21:44 Need to unpack all the Christmas stuff... but need to declutter and get rid of stuff to make room... damn small apartment. #

These "Pickin' on ____" albums are a guilty pleasure of mine. Pickin' on the '80s (see current music) is a recent purchase, but I've been in love with Pickin' on Pink Floyd for a good while. Maybe it's the classic country music fan in me (not modern country, ew, no not that) or maybe it's the mashup fan, or the humor in it... but it's great.

Dear LazyLiveJournal,
I can't find a way to search my own LJ. Is there a way to do it? Or is that one of those mean-spiritedly reserved for payin' customer features?

I've been having problems using Ventrilo on my mac. I'm currently running Snow Leopard (I upgraded all of two days ago), but I had these problems for a good six-eight months, so they aren't new. Basically after 10-30 minutes, any noise I make into the microphone of my USB headset comes out sounding robotic or full of static. I thought it was my headset, but after a bit of googling I found out that it might be a problem with the Ventrilo software - and that there was a supposed fix to the issue by messing with some .kext files.

This is what I followed, down to the letter. The java thing didn't help - I had no settings to change. But I attempted to downgrade, did exactly what I was instructed to do, and after a restart .. I can't get my computer to recognize the USB headset when it's plugged in. There's nothing but the default options in my sound system options. Since I was a good girl and backed up the original file, I tried to reinstall the current file, and when I went to repair I got an error saying it had been installed wrong. I repaired permissions anyway, rebooted, and nothing changed. Basically, tl;dr, I'm dumb and need a hand undoing my own stupidity. :P

I first read Mythago Wood rocking up the Hudson River Valley by rail; it was autumn. Tonight I stare at the nearly full moon, above my window reflecting neon lights, and mourn Holdstock. I will push aside the stack of Books that Need to be Read and pick up his stories - walking a while in his Woods.

I really think Snow Leopard was Apple's attempt to out-do Microsoft's Vista in most bugs released in a single Operating System.

I'm just blown away by all the weird brokenness.

1- Two freshly installed instances of Snow Leopard. One on a brand new Mac Mini and the other on a MacBook Pro. The Macbook had a harddrive icon on the desktop. The Mac Mini had _no harddrive_ icon on the desktop. (Had to go google how to fix it: Finder>Preferences> click Harddrive under "Show these items on Desktop)

2- Migration Assistant would not allow me to move an account from an old Mac Mini to the new Mac Mini because both accounts shared the same name.... Which was the whole point. I wanted to move over the old account onto the new machine, and that was the _only_ account on the new machine. I had to rename account and then manually go and cp -R files over to the new machine... which completely defeats the point of having Migration Assistant in the first place.

3- Whenever I would click on the Finder icon in the dock, I would get a Finder window that was empty for the current users home directory. But the home directory WAS NOT EMPTY. If I clicked on the username on the left side of the Finder File Browser window under "Places" I'd see all the folders in the user's directory. But again, whenever I click on the Finder icon in the dock I'd get an empty window in Finder for the users home directory which was NOT empty.

4- Problem of not being able to find windows have always been a problem in MacosX since day one. Which is why Apple came up with Expose as a means to combat not being able to find windows buried under other windows. Which is odd given that Apple actually has a feature called "Single Application Mode" buried in the UI. You can activate it by holding down Option + Apple and clicking an icon in the dock. What that does is Auto-Hides All Other Applications. Problem is, if you don't know that trick good luck finding anything in the UI. I was buying and registering games and time and time again the registration window was buried under a window and unseen to me, waiting for me type in information to register the game. Again, this has always been a problem in MacOSX.

5- As stated before, many preference windows for things like Firefox and Thunderbird do not render correctly under Snow Leopard. You get strange graphical artifacts as you flip through the preferences windows.

----Now onto hardware ------

Mac Mini now ships with Mini-DVI and Firewire 800. Yet I have a iSight Camera (firewire 400) that's connected to my Apple flat screen monitor which WAS connected to old Mac Mini with the Apple only Apple Display Connector. Problem is the new Mac Mini's are Firewire 400 and Mini-DVI... so I'll no longer be able to connect my iSight DIRECTLY into the back of my Monitor. I'll instead have to go buy a Firewire 400 to 800 cable and run it down from the iSight camera directly to the Mac Mini... Which negates having the firewire port on the back of the Apple Display. Grrr!

And don't get me started on the Mini-DVI port. The Mini-DVI port needs screws... badly... to hold in the Mini DVI to DVI adapter which falls out all the time on its own.

Dr Rajendra Pachauri, the chair of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, flew at least 443,243 miles on IPCC business in this 19 month period. This business included honorary degree ceremonies, a book launch and a Brookings Institute dinner, the latter involving a flight of 3500 miles.

Hotel guests should have their electricity monitored; hefty aviation taxes should be introduced to deter people from flying; and iced water in restaurants should be curtailed

I have a grey sweater with a buttoned shaved collar – made of thick natural wool, knitted in Canada on Vancouver Island – and never washed or cleaned. It smells of wood smoke, tobacco, pine sap, and chocolate, plus the mothballs and cedar shavings. I’d recognize it in the dark of night by touch and smell alone.

Besides its practicality of being warm and almost wind and water proof, history is invisibly woven into it . . . memories of all the places and times I have worn it . . . the morning and evening campfires and cedar smoke of ancient evergreen forests . . . the companions beside those fires . . . standing with a morning cup of coffee outside my cabin when I ran the boyscout camp on Silver Lake . . . snowy Idaho winter days . . . cherished times long past . . .

The sweater is a ritual garment, provoking feelings of contentment and delight. I put it away in spring with reluctance and retrieve it in fall with the joy of reunion with an old and trusted friend. The day of reunion has come.

I was very pleased to join Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius, the President’s Senior Advisor Valerie Jarrett, ONAP Director Jeffrey Crowley, and Dr. Elly Katabira, President-elect of the International AIDS Society at the White House today for an event on the eve of World AIDS Day 2009.   World AIDS Day is an occasion to reflect on how far we have come in the fight against this epidemic, but also to remind ourselves of the important work we have yet to do in preventing and treating HIV.

This year marks my first World AIDS Day as the U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator, although I have been working on HIV/AIDS issues for more than 25 years.  In addition to my work treating persons living with HIV and AIDS, I have held various roles in and outside of government working to respond to HIV/AIDS in the U.S. and around the world.  I was deeply humbled when the President appointed me to serve as the Global AIDS Coordinator.  We are just getting started, but President Obama has demonstrated solid leadership on domestic and global HIV/AIDS issues, and it is an exciting time to be a part of his team.

At today’s event, Secretary Clinton announced that the 2012 International AIDS Conference will be held in Washington, DC.  This momentous event is made possible by the Administration’s recent lifting of the entry ban for HIV-positive travelers to the United States. The full removal of the ban takes effect on January 4, 2010.  This entry ban was originally placed into effect in 1987 when there was little information on how HIV is spread, and was then codified by Congress.  Even after scientists had long proved that HIV/AIDS was not spread through casual contact with a person living with HIV, the entry ban remained in place.  Only a handful of countries worldwide prohibit HIV-positive travelers from crossing their borders, and the United States has been the only Western country to uphold this discriminatory policy.  Last year, Congress finally repealed the law mandating the travel ban, and the Obama Administration was able to remove the remaining regulatory barriers.

Hosting the International AIDS Conference in the United States is an important opportunity for the United States. This event draws scientists, policy makers, program officials, HIV-positive individuals and others from all over the world.  As the largest conference of its type, the International AIDS Conference attracts more than 25,000 participants and over 3,000 members of the media.  Welcoming conference attendees to our Nation’s capital will allow America to demonstrate our ongoing commitment to ending the HIV pandemic both in the United States and around the world.  Given that the conference is fundamentally a research conference, holding this event in such close proximity to the National Institutes of Health and other U.S. Government research facilities will also, hopefully, expand the level of scientific discourse between our scientists and researchers from around the world.

Hosting the conference in the United States will also enable us to showcase our efforts to respond to our domestic HIV/AIDS epidemic.  By 2012, the U.S. will have a National HIV/AIDS Strategy in place for the first time in our nation’s history.  We expect to have made new strides by then to better coordinate HIV prevention and care services across the U.S. Government, as well as to reduce HIV/AIDS disparities.  In addition, the conference will allow us to spotlight our ongoing and continued commitment to the U.S. President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and the President’s Global Health Initiative.

World AIDS Day is an important day to pause and reflect.  It is also an important day to look forward with renewed optimism and vigor.  Today’s announcement by Secretary Clinton is a sign of renewed commitment that gives us all hope as we move forward in the fight against HIV/AIDS and confront the many challenges ahead.

Eric P. Goosby, MD is the United States Ambassador at Large and Global AIDS Coordinator

Geoffrey Dunn catches a hilarious mistake in Sarah Palin's book:

But perhaps the most embarrassing gaffe so far is her mis-attributed quote to UCLA basketball legend John Wooden.

As the epigram to Chapter Three, "Drill, Baby, Drill," Palin assigns the following remarks to the Hall of Fame hoops coach:

Our land is everything to us... I will tell you one of the things we remember on our land. We remember our grandfathers paid for it--with their lives.

Only the quote wasn't by John Wooden. It was written by a Native American activist named John Wooden Legs in an essay entitled "Back on the War Ponies," which appeared in a left-wing anthology, We Are the People: Voices from the Other Side of American History, edited by Nathaniel May, Clint Willis, and James W. Loewen.

Here's the full quote:

Our land is everything to us. It is the only place in the world where Cheyennes talk the Cheyenne language to each other. It is the only place where Cheyennes remember the same things together. I will tell you one of the things we remember on our land. We remember our grandfathers paid for it--with their life. My people and the Sioux defeated General Custer at the Little Big Horn.

Oops! That's not quite the sentiment that Sister Sarah was trying to convey as she guzzled down sugar-free Red Bull and cranked up Toby Keith's "How Do You Like Me Now?" while jumping on her patriotic high horse at the opening of the third chapter.

This is, by far, the coolest VPN program I've ever run across. It's fast, it's full featured, ad it's free.
I'm currently setting up renders on my friend Dan's quad core computer. I'm starting the render program on his machine, browsing for parameter files on my computer, and it's rendering on his box without him having to do a thing other than starting a session.

This is a SWEET tool for showing someone how to do something on their computer, or fixing something, or even transferring files using the built in FTP proggie.

Honestly, I am floored by how cool this is. Did I mention it's FREE?!?

Since you can't buy new TxtLJ notifications anymore, 275 is essentially the account level limits, "you might get charged for this", and "no, FAQ 30 is different from TxtLJ". I'd like to fold this into 274, to keep all the TxtLJ info in one place, especially since 274 mentions there are limits but doesn't say what they are and already includes a "you might get charged for this" warning. Plus a link to 30 would be easy to drop in there.

274 would then look like this... )

the establishment of his messianic throne

the Tetragrammation

rabbinic literature gives seven names of God which can never be erased

the projection of God's heavenly rule into the earthly sphere

a heavenly language discourse

the concept of multiple heavens as found in the apocalyptic literature

it is poetic language, not technical-cosmological nor apocalyptic

the door to the kingdom now stands open throughout the ages

Jesus' resurrection will be the event that transforms his disciples into the foundation of the church

there are only two choices: God's way of Satan' way

one must choose between the way of Christ (heaven) or the way of the Pharisees and scribes (earth)

the horror of the Cross

he uses the cross and crucifixion as an image of discipleship

the post-resurrection Jesus who now has authority in heaven and in earth

the hope-giving function of an apocalyptic orientation toward the future age

the First Gospel shares an apocalyptic viewpoint or worldview and looks forward to Christ's eschatological kingdom

apocalyptic motifs in Matthew

an insignificant conflict in a remote wasteland

an easy bucolic life

a cosmological worldview

the illusory nature of earthly happiness

a dismal weariness of life

the gathering of all exiles under the Messiah

and had gathered more words than anyone had ever done before

a gloomy gazer on a world to which I have little relation

knowing where the Terrestrial Paradise was located is not necessary for salvation

a doubt about the ten tribes is tantamount to uncertainty about the messianic vision as a whole

"Thus, the positive answer to both of the questions raised leads to the conclusion that while there cannot be absolute certainty with regard to eschatological fulfillment in the present, the contemporary state of Israel, and especially its possession of Jerusalem, suggests a high degree of probability that eschatological fulfillment is in process before our very eyes." pg. 61 Barry E. Horner

"I would rigorously disagree with that mystical, indeed contorted incorporation of the land into the new cosmos in such a way that all territorial identity of Israel is lost." pg. 64 Horner

the eschatological prospect of Jesus Christ being personally worshiped from Jerusalem

I believe this future temple, situated in Jerusalem will accommodate the enthroned temple Jesus

Jesus can feed the twelve disciples with one loaf

the proposal is to build three booths, not one throne

the transfiguration as a preview of the coming parousia of the Son of Man

the transfiguration reveals the kingdom by unveiling the king

Jesus must be seen as the final eschatological prophet whom Moses predicted would come

power is conveyed through communion with the Almighty

the value of unleashing a wild imagination

re-created the Romantic aspects of an imaginative journey to an exotic place

the ten tribes as a mighty army of superhuman entities coming with the Antichrist

the search for Arzareth had stretched over millennia

human life is always a matter of the realization of meaning

the blind spot in logical absolutism

symbols are a central category for the communication of religious meaning

memory is the definitive reference to the experience of time

the defeat of Satan is a sign that the final era of salvation is already breaking in

an eschatological perspective is typical of Jesus' teaching

"For Jesus, a theology of creation in the wisdom tradition and radical ethics in view of the present-and-coming kingdom of God are not mutually exclusive alternatives but supplement each other in his theocentric perspective." pg. 111 Udo Schnelle

one's response to Jesus will be the decisive factor in the coming judgment

the time of the coming judgment cannot be calculated

to forget God is to lose one's life

"But Jesus said to him, "No one, having put his hand to the plow, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God" Luke 9:62.

for the historical Jesus the kingdom of God and the last judgment were inseparable

It is 4:28 PM I will close to put my stuff away. Carol is still sleeping. We are now in the Advent Season.

- Well! The most difficult problem is to choose a proper cake?

Well, I didn't really mean to be gone so long, and really I need to be gone longer because I have not enough to say, or too much to say but not enough time, or muddled head, or some combination of the three.

Thanksgiving has come and gone. E-boy and I went alone to Chicago because C-man couldn't get off work. We had Thanksgiving, just the family, and a wee bit of family angst as is appropriate for the holiday. We had a trip to the science museum and dinner, partly because we wanted to go out to dinner and partly to celebrate two of the three birthdays we always celebrate over the Thanksgiving break (mom and dad's, 26th and 27th). We had E-boy's family birthday celebration, which involved ice cream cake and great present-giving and a very happy boy. We had mom and dad's annual customer appreciation dinner.

We drove home.

I am at work where I should be working in a frenzied manner on the now never-ending sooper sekrit project and a few other almost equally important things. But I am having a hard time and have only accomplished a few key things today. The push will come later in the week, as my sooper sekrit deadline is Friday.

This week we have birthday cake planning, present shopping, and holiday card thinking and preparing. Thursday is E-boy's birthday, followed by a full weekend of my third and final writing workshop of the year, E-boy's celebration with friends who are not boys from his school, E-boy's birthday celebration with friends who *are* boys from his school, and holiday decorating.

Phew.

I think I know what I'm baking this year in the holiday cookie department. The old favorite, Gramma's frosted cutouts; the new favorite, chai-spiced thumbprints; the cranberry-orange-pistachio drop cookies that I like and that are reasonably healthy for a holiday treat; possibly some sort of chocolate cookie; and either triple ginger cookies or cranberry, candied lemon and white chocolate florentines, or both. The question is, will I have time to make other things as well? I always want to try candies, and I'd love to do a marmalade. I didn't do peppermint bark last year as I'd been having some trouble with it in recent years, which annoyed me because it is supposed to be uber-easy. So I eliminated the bark to eliminate some stress and frustration. I may add it back in if I come across the chocolates I like to use.

Don't freak out that I'm talking about the holidays. In practice, this week is all about a birthday, which only leaves about two and a half weeks for holiday stuff. I need to think holiday in order to be prepared for such a short timeframe and maintain enjoyment rather than stress and angst.

Today, the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) released an analysis (pdf) of the Senate version health insurance reform – and it contains more good news about what reform will mean for families struggling to keep up with skyrocketing premiums under the broken status quo.

Like other recent analyses, the CBO report finds that lower administrative costs, increased competition, and better pooling for risk will mean lower premiums for American families. Among the findings:

Americans buying comparable health plans to what they have today in the individual market would see premiums fall by 14 to 20 percent. Those who get coverage through their employer today will likely see a decrease in premiums as well. And Americans who currently struggle to find coverage would see lower premiums because more people will be covered.

In addition to the welcome relief on costs, the CBO reports that Americans will also have better insurance options. The CBO assumes that many people will take advantage of these better options and "buy up" to purchase better plans than are currently offered in the individual market.

Not surprisingly, some of reform's opponents have already started trying to distort that finding to make false claims that reform will raise costs. So let's be clear: where the CBO does see premiums rising, it's not because Americans are paying more for the same coverage – it's that they’re making a choice to purchase better plans that weren't previously available to them.

In keeping with that finding, the CBO affirms the effectiveness of the grandfather policy, which will allow you to keep what you have if you like it. The report reads, "Moreover, if they wanted to, current policyholders in the nongroup market would be allowed to keep their policy with no changes, and the premiums for those policies would probably not differ substantially from current-law levels."

Finally, it’s worth nothing that for all the good news in the CBO report, the analysis doesn't even take into account all of the bill’s measures to control costs and improve coverage. So if anything, it understates the positive impacts of reform. For example, the CBO does not take into account policies like the catastrophic option available to young adults, and reinsurance provision, that would reduce premiums even further.

It also does not incorporate potential effects of the proposal on the level or growth rate of spending for health care. For instance, CBO’s analysis does not fully capture the effects of the excise tax on high-cost plans, which will bend the cost curve over the long-term. But it did provide a snapshot: for plans affected by the tax in 2016, premiums would be 9-12 percent lower than under current law.
