why did the deer come over the hill?

It was my first outing with my 500mm lens.  I went up to Hurricane Ridge in Olympic National Park and my first subject was a mother black bear and cub (dots).  They were so far away that I didn't see them browsing way up in a meadow above my chosen spot until someone passing my pointed them out... they were so far away that I had to use a 2X teleconverter making the lens effectively 1000mm and they were still bear dots.    I watched them for a while and decided that it wouldn't be prudent to climb the slope to get closer.   If I did, they would have gone over the mountain.

A little later, this young buck with thick velvet on his antlers came into view and I decided to follow him and photograph whatever he did... mostly to practice moving and focusing the big glass.  It is big glass and takes a hefty tripod and gimbal head to use.   Here's why the deer came over the hill...

Re: zancro

Firefox is really messing up recently from displaying only thumbnails to giving me multiple password prompts (I counted three dozen and then forced quit)... I guess it's time to put Firefox into the bin with Netscape and move over to Safari. (I've always considered Safari to be really slow compared head to head on my machines with other browsers.)

Re: zancro

I'm playing around with Ubuntu Linux right now, using the Firefox browser. It's not so bad. I'd have a 3rd hard drive with Apple on it, but they are about as stingy as Microsoft. I'm trying to get away from proprietary software as much as possible.

Nice deer pictures. Keep doing that!

Re: zancro

This picture and the one you posted aferward worked fine running Windows with Firefox, but not with Ubuntu with Firefox. I had to log into Windows just to find out. The main reason I'm migrating to Ubuntu is because of the proprietary antics of Microsoft and Apple.

I've been pleasantly surprised, this time around, with the Ubuntu flavor of Linux. If you have an extra hard drive, I advise trying it.

Re: zancro

I have used Macintosh computers in my home and my business because I had the experience in a past life of having to use other platforms and operating systems and often walked across the hall from my three computer systems in my office to use a Mac to get something done... I want the computer to work intuitively not have to learn all the computer 'stuff' to get something done... I like to finish something thinking what it took to do instead of adding 'and I beat a computer to do it'.

I once tried a Windows emulator on one of my machines so that I could run Topo, a program only available on that platform at the time... and decided that I liked paper maps better than having to run Windows... the Mac ran Windows faster than a PC did too...

Peace

Re: zancro

I'm trying to consolidate the 3 major operating systems. But, I know what you mean about getting things done.

When I had my own neon business, some guy asked me to make a neon sign fashioned after an infamous football team's logo. I tried for days and weeks to get the artwork online and on the computer and with photographs of bumper stickers and stuff. It just didn't work, and looked terrible.

Then, I said, "Wait! I'm an artist! I can do this!", and drew the thing out by hand. It only took me about a half an hour. Stupid computers!
