I made this image last weekend after a workshop where I was helping out. The composition was good as was the idea to display the ripples and reflections in the foreground. I used a polarizer to increase the contrast and deepen the color and cut haze but I used it at minimum so the water would still reflect. Although the sun was behind me, there were enough clouds bouncing light around that there was still some effect -- and the sun wasn't exactly in line with my lens.

There's a big problem with this image and the other dozen I made with the clouds moving across the sky was that I set up and chose f/9 for aperture because it's about the sharpest for this lens (about two stops down from full open with the aperture). I focused about a third of the way from the water in the foreground to the mountains so they would both be in focus (hyperfocal distance) but unfortunately, I moved the lens after I last looked through it and screwed up the distant focus.

But, the image is a good example (a good example of what can happen wrong when you don't pay attention to what you're doing).

Peace

Is the distant mountain actually covered with green trees? The smudge of green seems slightly out of place with the coloration of the rest of the image. Sharper probably would have made it better by giving it a bit of texture. No matter what, and as usual, it's a very nice piece.

The light green on the mountainside is the forest in evening light. It's a dark forest but lit by a break in the clouds.

I suppose I'll be back there again waiting for the light.

I like when you identify landmarks of places I'm now familiar with :)

This is so interesting. The clouds and water look so realistic but the mountains look "dreaming" like a resting place for dragons....or something.

"resting place for dragons"
interesting... there are three hot springs in these mountains. One has been developed, another a walk-in of a couple miles and the third... doesn't exist on any map and I haven't found anyone that will admit they know where it is. They are known as dragons by some and your comment reminded me that I haven't been to them in a while...

It's also neat because I think that the Merrymere falls area is a perfectly elven forest, from the log bridges to the tree staircases :) What a wonderful fantasyland.

Do you have, or do you know how I can get directions to the springs? I'd like to check the area out more thoroughly someday with friends. Also anything else you feel might be of interest would be most appreciated. I also like naturalist information.

Thank you! :)

Solduc Hot Springs is on road to Solduc Falls before the campground. It's a private consession in the park and set up like a commercial swimming pool. Olympic Hot Springs is up the Elwah and across the dam to the Boulder Creek trailhead and then a couple miles up the now abandoned paved road. There's a walk-in campground and the hot springs are across the creek on the hillside. There are a few different pools of different temperatures that folks have dug out. It's primative and there are the customary health hazard postings but considered safe. The third hot spring... you head off across the mountains off trail and when you find it you tell noone 'cept me where it is. I suspect that it's along one of the tributaries of the Elwah, perhaps Lillian River or Lost Creek...

Thanks! Just noticed the special effects on your info page photo. Very cool...I don't believe I've ever seen anything like that before.

'found the method while experimenting with making multiple layers with a different adjustment layers and a cutout filter limiting different amounts of detail and then made it into an animated gif...

I have not commented a lot lately, but your photos have been very beautiful, including this one.
